3s' History Trip to Pevensey Castle & Battle Abbey

On Tuesday 20th  June the 3s enjoyed a fantastic day out on their history trip.  First, we went to Pevensey Castle to see the spot where William the Conqueror landed with his army in 1066.  We admired the ruined walls from the Roman fort dating back to about 300AD and then explored the remains of the medieval castle.  Next we drove to Battle Abbey.  For over an hour two English Heritage staff entertained and engaged the pupils with their "Discovery Tour", retelling the story of the events of 1066.  Some of the pupils got to play important characters such as Duke William, Harold Godwinson and Harald Hardrada, complete with costumes and wigs!  It was very hands-on with weapons, shields and chainmail.  The tour ended with the pupils re-enacting a mock Battle of Hastings.  After a picnic lunch we watched an excellent film on the events of 1066 and concluded our visit with a half-hour walk of the battlefield itself.  Many thanks to Mr Hills and Miss Tallia-Rume for coming along and helping to make the trip such a success.  MH
