3s' Science Week

The 3s have had a great week with differing outings and tasks in school all relating to Science.  Read below of all that they achieved and alongside the photos here do have a look on our Gallery for lots more.

Day 1 Pond dipping and digging pitfall traps in the Jungle.
We skimmed the pond and looked at the variety of invertebrates under mini-microscopes. We took a tally of the animals we could identify. We dug traps around the forest floor to see what crawling things we could catch over-night.

Day 2 A day on the Ashdown Forest looking at branching keys to identify leaves. We also collected samples of invertebrates from the grasslands and the woodland areas and compared what we found. We also used quadrats to compare plant varieties on different parts of the Forest - mown areas and more wild areas. We did practical science and understood how people affect, conserve and manage areas of specialist habitats like the heathland of Ashdown Forest.

Day 3 We collected out samples from the pitfall traps. Because of the unseasonally cold nights we had limited results but we did identify 11 different species.

Day 4 - Day at the British Wildlife Centre. We were shown how to be mammal detectives, looking at spore, scat, habitats and hearing the sounds hedgehogs and foxes make.
We were introduced to badgers, red squirrels, polecats, foxes, the incredibly rare and untameable Scottish wild cats, adders, otters, deer, owls, bees, harvest mice and Mrs McCarthy's favourites - the rat!

We learned loads and |I hope the children did too.  FN
