Canterbury Cathedral - visit by the 4s

After the long journey from Ashdown the 4s arrived in Canterbury where they had a much needed snack before beginning the day by dressing up as some of the people of Thomas Beckett’s time – monks, pilgrims, knights and a king (Johnny was Henry II who, he told us, is his ancestor).  We heard the story of Beckett’s friendship with the King and then how that turned sour and how he was killed by knights hired by the King to carry out the dastardly deed – we also learned that one of these knights was one of our teachers' ancestors….(take a look at the pictures for a bit of a clue!)

After seeing the amazing architecture of the Cathedral and the stunning stained glass windows, we were shown some of the crafts of that time – and tried quite a few (making stained glass, writing with a quill and chiselling stones to name but a few).
